Nairobi’s National Museum organises a Laikipia Wildlife Forum (LWF), which foresees the premiere screening of a documentary movie, entitled Laikipia: The Land of Life, as well as the launch of a book entitled Laikipia: A Natural History Guide. The LWF is a dynamic, membership led organization, committed to bettering people’s lives in the area through supporting and generating livelihoods, while securing dependable, sustained access to essential natural resources. It provides a platform for dialogue for land owners and land users as well as local community groups, private ranchers, pastoralists, small scale farmers and tourism ventures. 20 January-4 February 2012. The Phoenix Players stage the theatrical play Respect, written by Lutz Hubnerand directed by Millicent Ogutu. Respect tells the story of four teenagers on a journey to Germany. But during their first day in Cologne their lives undergo great, dramatic changes. In fact, one protagonist dies, two are in police custody and the fourth must recover from stab wounds. more
Artists’ Call for the Manjano Exhibition

Muziki wa Kenya: Michel Ongaro

28 January 2012. This concert, features on of Kenya's most famous singers and songwriters Michel Ongaro. Ever since he was a child Ongaro developed a strong interest for music. Throughout his musical career Ongaro has been influenced by African rhythms, Jazz as well as Latin and classical music. He gradually became a multi-instrumentalist and started to compose his own music pieces. On this occasion Ongaro will present his new album, entitled Mazoea, which in English means habit. This Cd contains acoustic music, which mixes Kenyan rhythms such as chakacha and benga. The concert starts at 19.00. more
Grassroots Upgraded Exhibition

14 January 2012. The exhibition, entitled Glassroots Upgraded, offers a deep reflection on Nairobi's Eastlands and is the Slum-TV’s biggest Art project so far. On display are a series of improvised, spontaneous and unconventional photographs, installations and video works, which offer a unique perspective of life in Nairobi’s Eastlands, challenging the stereotypes about life in the marginal areas of town and revealing a dynamic and bustling urban life. Its aim is to raise questions among the public regarding how Nairobi is represented, the city's image as well as how it can be shaped. Event starts at 19.00. more

This event is the second one organised at Goethe during the past year and launches a new series made of three new books by Peterson Kamwathi, Sam Hopkins and Ato Malinda, who are protagonists of the East African artistic and intellectual scene. In Kenya there are very few publications in the field of art such as art catalogues, artists’ books and academic publishing. Only very few Kenyan artists have had the chance to publish a catalogue of their work and only few Kenyan intellectuals working in the Humanities have had their major work published internationally. 13 January 2012. This break-dance performance is entitled Breaksession Bboy Battle by Joe Nene (a.k.a. Bboy Kay/BreakDj Kay). This event was performed for the first time in Kenya in July 2011 and had a great success. Its goal is to spread break-dance and the so called Bboy Revolution around Kenya as part of the hip-hop culture. Participants will battle, compare and work with other performers to share similar skills and ideals. Joe Nene started dancing 17 years ago, inspired by the late Michael Jackson, and continued under the influence of Usher, the late Aaliyah, and Missy Eliott. Event starts at 19.00. more
Kismet Musical at Braeburn Theatre

10-11 December 2011. This musical, performed at Braeburn Theatre, is entitled Kismet, which means fate, and tells the humorous story of a poor but very cunning poet. His daughter falls in love a king, the Caliph. The play, performed by a cast of over 60 people, is accompanied by some Asian music played by Nairobi’s Conservatoire Orchestra. Concert by Moipei Quartet at National Museum

17 December 2011. The Moipei Quartet performs its wide repertoire of Classical, Pop and African music and also displays their mastery of various musical instruments. The Moipei Quartet is composed by Mary, Magdalene and Marta and their younger sister Seraphine. They have toured the world and performed at prestigious events such as the Young People’s Festival in South Korea, the World Urban Forum in China and Canada and the Festival with People of Africa in Venezuela. Recently they performed at the 4th SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards in Durban, South Africa where they won an Award in Best of Africa category. The Moipei Quartet was also awarded Head of State Commendation (HSC) by the President of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki and in 2007 they were nominated UNICEF Child Ambassadors. Proceeds will be devolved to the Nairobi Hospice to Support Children with Cancer. Concert lasts from 19.00 to 21.00. more

14 December 2011. The Michael Joseph Center hosts this concert by The Marafiki band led by Ricky Nanjero, one of the leading bass guitarists in Kenya and East Africa. This programme includes live music from its afro jazz repertoire, including pieces from their album Tucheze. This concert is organized to raise funding to enable Ricky to travel to the USA. more
