The Goethe-Institut continues its series of events promoting African up-and-coming artists, with its current exhibition of the work of Congolese photographer and film maker Sammy Baloji. Produced in collaboration with Congolese performance artist Faustin Linyekula and supported by Autograph ABP/London, Baloji's film Mémoire was recently screened during a month long installation in London. The film examines the colonial past and post-colonial future of the Democratic Republic of Congo. As an artist, Bajoli is primarily concerned with the themes of expolitation, power and violence. 10-31 Aug 2010. The Alliance Française in Nairobi presents two art exhibitions in August. The first is Unveiling Africa, a group show of paintings, portraits and steel art by the young Kenyan artists Philip Ondik, Boniface Maina and Mathew Owino, who together have tried to give a positive view of the African continent. The second is an exhibition of acrylic portraits by Benjamin Vasapolli, executed during the artist’s many travels across Africa, South America, Australia and Oceania. more

Over 1,500 athletes and officials from across the continent are expected at the 17th edition of the African senior athletics championships organised by the Confederation of African Athletics. This exhibition is the result of a poster competition entitled Libraries with a Kick, launched in sub-Saharian countries on the occasion of the recent FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa. It presents posters and slogans created by children and adults that create, explore or underline the links between libraries and football as well as focusing on the role of reading and access to information. In the end 14 posters from ten countries were chosen from over 1,000 entries. Public libraries in the participating countries received the national winner for use for promotional purposes. more

On this occasion the international artists reflect on the legacy and importance of the Danish author Karen Blixen, who lived on the outskirts of Nairobi from 1914 to 1931 and gave her name to the present-day suburb of Karen. more
