Telecommunications: Digital TV in Kenya
Tuesday, December 15th 2009Kenya has begun the transition from analogue to digital terrestrial television (DTT), the second African country to do so. South Africa began its migration to DTT in 2008, partly in view of the football World Cup in 2010.
Kenya’s president Mwai Kibaki launched the first phase of the switchover at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation on 9 December. The first people to benefit from the better image and sound quality and greater programme choice offered by DTT are residents of Nairobi and its environs, including Kajiado, Machakos, Naivasha and Murang’a. Viewers with conventional analogue television sets now need a digital converter box or decoder in order to capture the new signal.
The government hopes to complete the switchover by 2012.
