The village of Ngecha near Nairobi is renowned for producing some of the best self-taught artists in Kenya. In 1995 a group of local artists got together to form Ngecha Art Association with the aim of furthering art through exhibitions, workshops and mass media; developing indigenous as well as non-traditional art forms; and cooperating with international visual arts organizations. The association also has its own gallery in the YMCA building in Ngecha Town.
